"connecting" message not going away

Since the new update, started the game, asked for my name (hopefully haven't lost my skills!) but now it's stuck on the messages "welcome <name>" and "connecting" alternating and won't go any further.

could I add you to a special test group on the beta? I'm going to just hide this welcome back message so people can tell me what they see behind it.  I'm not able to recreate it unfortunately, but its of upgrading players are experiencing it!
